Fragmented World

Intersecting elevated structures and fragmented spaces in the game world.

Overview

Fragmented World is a game project that portrays the convergence, conflict, and mutual reinforcement of physical and virtual spaces through social media. In this process, human bodies undergo alienation, becoming increasingly detached from the original cultural and emotional contexts of urban spaces.

Research / Context

Social media labels reshape perceptions of real space.

On social media, homogeneous image-text codes cluster around real geographical locations, compressing complex places into simplified and repeatable representations. These mediated codes do not replace reality, but reshape how it is perceived, circulated and imagined.

Research collage connecting social media labels, representations of bodies and urban locations.
Field research revealed that spaces beneath the same labels are not uniform.

Although urban spaces may be compressed into similar labels online, their lived conditions remain complex, contradictory and discontinuous.

Field research photographs and observations comparing the lived conditions of labelled urban spaces.
Bodies and places become fragmented into circulable digital units.

In social media, bodies and places are repeatedly detached from their original contexts, fragmented into images, labels and experiences that can be recombined and circulated.

Bodies, places and digital images assembled into a sequence of circulating fragments.

Idea

Fragmented World turns this process into a game space, where physical and virtual fragments collide, overlap and reconstruct one another.
